Keep Your Calm This Holiday Season: How to Stay Grounded as a Parent When Things Get Hectic

The holidays are often called “the most wonderful time of the year,” but for many parents, they can also be one of the most overwhelming. Between family gatherings, disrupted routines, travel plans, and the pressure to make everything magical, it’s easy for stress to take the wheel.

If you’ve ever found yourself losing patience over spilled cocoa, sibling squabbles, or yet another holiday event on the calendar — you’re not alone. Parenting through the holidays takes a lot of emotional energy, and it’s perfectly normal to feel stretched thin.

That’s why we’re inviting you to a free virtual parent workshop, “Keep Your Calm This Holiday Season,” on Thursday, December 4th from 12–1 PM PST — co-facilitated by Parent Coach/Consultant Lindsay Elledge, LCSW (Secure Roots Parent Consultation) and Child Therapist Stella Sanderson, LCSW.

This live workshop will explore simple, evidence-informed strategies to help you stay centered and connected with your child — no matter how busy the season gets.

Why the Holidays Can Feel So Hard for Parents

The holiday season stirs up so many expectations: to be joyful, grateful, calm, and present. Yet it’s also a time when kids’ sleep schedules shift, routines are disrupted, and emotions run high — for both kids and adults.

Stress isn’t just in your head — it shows up in your body and in your parenting. When your nervous system is overloaded, it becomes harder to stay patient, regulate your tone, or respond thoughtfully to your child’s needs. The good news? You can strengthen your “calm muscle” with awareness and practice.

3 Ways to Keep Your Calm This Holiday Season

1. Pause Before Reacting

When you feel your stress rising, take a brief pause — even a single breath can help your brain shift from “react” to “respond.”
Try this: silently say to yourself, “I’m noticing my body feels tense,” and exhale slowly. That moment of mindfulness gives you space to choose your next move, rather than being swept away by frustration.

2. Protect Your Energy

You don’t have to say yes to every invitation or tradition. Simplifying your schedule — or building in quiet “recharge” days — can make the holidays far more enjoyable for your family.
Ask yourself, “Will this bring connection or chaos?” Let that guide your decisions.

3. Model Calm for Your Kids

Children learn emotional regulation by watching us. When you practice calm — even imperfectly — you’re showing them what self-regulation looks like. Narrate your process out loud: “I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed right now, so I’m going to take a deep breath.” It normalizes emotions and teaches coping tools in real time.
